Daily veneer care is a soft brush and floss at the edge, without using your teeth as tools. At Smile Makers in Jeddah a night guard is worn if the dentist prescribed it, not as a habit imposed on every mouth. Coffee and tea stain the shell's edge more than they stain the ceramic itself.
How do you brush a shell?
Use a soft brush. That is the first line. A hard brush with a horizontal stroke scrapes the gum around ceramic the way it scrapes enamel.
The gum recedes, a line shows at the neck of the shell, and you think the veneer "ended." Often the gum is what moved. A soft brush protects the edge you came for.
The stroke is short, from the gum toward the tip, without pressure that whitens your fingers on the handle. Two minutes are enough for the whole mouth. You do not need an electric brush before you are allowed to take care of the shells. If you use one, choose a soft head and let it work without adding pressure with your hand.
The paste does not have to be expensive. A gritty paste sold for stains can scratch the cement edge over time. The scratch holds tea.
An ordinary fluoride paste suits most people, unless the dentist prescribed one for sensitivity. Ask before you buy a tube labeled as whitening.
In the days after bonding, cold sensitivity can be clearer. Do not stop brushing. Ease the cold water if it zings, and keep going gently at the edge.
Skipping days puts tartar back on new cement. Tartar there is harder to deal with than a passing zing.
Where does the floss go?
Floss passes at the edge, where ceramic meets tooth, not only on the shiny middle of the face. That is where tartar gathers and a brown stain starts. Slide the floss in gently so you do not cut the gum, and move it against the side of each tooth.
Bleeding in the first days after bonding can happen. If it lasts a week, we want to see you.
Do not replace floss with a pick you shove hard between two shells. Force can open a contact or wound the gum. If the space is tight, a floss threader or a softer floss gets through. Ask at a review if your floss snags and tugs the edge.
Mouthwash does not replace floss. Rinse reaches what it can flow over. Under the contact, tartar stays if floss never pulled it.
Use a rinse if one was prescribed, at the dilution on the sheet. A burning rinse every hour irritates the gum around a new shell.
If the gum bleeds around one shell only, do not generalize to the whole row. That shell's edge may be open, or it may be trapping food. A clear photo helps reception.
The exam sees whether polishing is enough or the cement needs a look. Do not wait until the edge turns dark.
What teeth should not do
Do not open a packet. Do not cut thread. Do not bite nails or pens.
Do not bite ice. Those movements twist a thin edge or split a corner. A shell handles ordinary chewing on the back teeth.
It is weak when it is used as a tool.
Move the habit to the molars. Nuts, bone, and dry bread are broken there, or cut by hand before they reach the mouth. In the first days after bonding, start with soft food until you know the new feeling.
Then return to your meals with the rule still in place. The front is for speech. The back is for hard chewing.
If a shell comes off, keep it in a box. Do not glue it with household adhesive. Glue ruins the surface and irritates the gum, and it makes medical rebonding harder.
Call. Sometimes the shell is rebonded if it did not break and the tooth has no decay. Sometimes a new one is made.
We do not promise rebonding every time.
A sports guard is not a grinding guard. If you play a sport with contact to the face, ask about a guard that protects the whole mouth. A shell is not armor against a blow. Mention the activity at a review so we do not assume your day is only sitting.
Coffee and the edge
Ceramic does not drink tea the way enamel does. The edge and the cement do. A cup that sits on the teeth stains the brown line that bothers people after months.
A rinse with water after coffee or tea shortens the time. That is a reduction, not an absolute ban on every cup for the rest of your life.
Smoking stains the edge faster, especially in the first weeks. Smoking less helps new cement. We do not write it as a condition in every agreement.
We write it as a description of what we see on edges. If you smoke, do not be surprised by color at the margin while you brush well. The margin meets the smoke even with good floss.
A gritty whitening paste is not the fix for a brown line. It can add scratches. Polishing at the clinic removes a surface that paste does not remove safely.
Book a cleaning when you see the line, not when it turns dark. Regular cleaning is part of how a veneer looks. It is not a separate service only for people without shells.
Turmeric and dark sauce reach the same edge more slowly than smoking. A rinse after eating is enough as a habit. We do not publish a closed food list for someone with veneers.
We name the place at risk. The place is the line between ceramic and tooth, not the shiny middle of the shell.
When is a night guard worn?
A night guard is worn if the dentist finds it necessary, because you clench in your sleep or because the edges have started to wear. We do not ask for it from everyone who had a veneer. Wearing one without a need can bother the joint, or it can get dirty if you skip cleaning it. Wearing it when it is needed protects a corner that would have chipped.
If one was prescribed, clean it the way you clean a tray. Lukewarm water and a soft brush, not boiling water that warps it. If it cracks or becomes loose, do not keep wearing it.
A broken guard can press on one shell. Bring it to a review so we see it with the bite.
Do not buy a ready-made guard from a shop and wear it on new shells without being seen. A ready-made one can be thick and push the jaw. A guard made on your impression, if one is needed, is different.
Ask before you buy. A small shop price can cost an edge.
Grinding should not be hidden. If you wake with jaw pain or with flat tooth surfaces, say so before bonding, and afterward as well. A shell does not treat grinding.
It is affected by it. A plan that ignores grinding is a shorter life for the edge.
When do you call the clinic?
Call if a shell comes off, a corner chips, the gum stays red around one tooth, or a throb starts. Cold that lasts a few days and then eases is something we see often. A throb and pus are not things we ask you to push through.
WhatsApp is 055 117 0327. Name the tooth and send a photo of the edge if you can.
Do not wait for an event or a trip. An open edge lets stain and food underneath, and an earlier repair is simpler. If you are outside Jeddah, a photo helps judge whether waiting a few days is reasonable or you need a clinic where you are for an urgent problem.
Heavy bleeding, or swelling with fever, does not wait on an article. An emergency service comes first if the clinic is closed.
The regular review is set after the exam, not as a number of months fixed here. Bring questions about floss, paste, and the guard written down if you forgot them at the first visit. Memory after numbing is short.
A booking for an exam or a review is a request with your name, a Saudi mobile number, the service, and privacy consent. There is no clock time on the form. Reception calls during opening hours.
There is one clinic in Jeddah. Smile Makers is the display name. مجمّع عيادات صُنّاع الابتسامة الطبي is the legal name.
Daily care is what keeps a veneer's look between visits. It does not put back enamel that was removed, and it does not prevent every chip if ice is bitten. It keeps the edge clean so the ceramic can live on a decision you understood. Results differ from person to person.
