Tartar cleaning removes the hard layer around the tooth and under the gum edge, and it is not meant to drill healthy enamel. At Smile Makers in Jeddah, sensitivity can show up after the visit and then ease for many people. If the gums had already receded, removing tartar can make the root look more exposed.
What does the cleaning remove?
Tartar is a hard layer of minerals and debris that sticks at the neck of the tooth and under the gum edge. A brush does not break it once it has hardened. The cleaning instrument breaks it and lifts it off. What remains is the tooth surface that was underneath, not a tooth carved smaller.
In the clinic we first look at how much tartar there is and at the color of the gum. If there is bleeding or swelling, we may measure pocket depth. That separates an ordinary cleaning from deeper gum care.
People use one name. The work is not the same. The visit is explained before the instrument starts.
Polishing after the tartar is gone clears surface stain from tea and coffee. The shine you see in the mirror is often from the loss of that layer, not from a whitening material. Someone who wants a lighter shade than that asks about whitening after the gums settle. Cleaning alone does not lighten enamel from the inside.
The visit length changes with the amount of tartar. We do not fix minutes here. A mouth that was skipped for years is different from a mouth that returns regularly.
The instrument vibrates, or it is used by hand where needed. The feeling is pressure and water, and it can zing if the neck is exposed.
Is enamel drilled away?
No. The aim of the visit is to remove what is not part of the tooth. Healthy enamel is not the target of a drill.
If your teeth feel "thinner," the tartar was often filling a space between teeth or covering the neck, and when it left, the original shape showed. The original shape may include small spaces you had not seen.
There is a difference between a cleaning and drilling a tooth to prepare a crown or a shell. The second removes enamel on purpose. The first does not.
If you are asked to prepare a tooth the same day with no explanation, ask what will be removed. A cleaning does not need that question in the same way, because the enamel stays.
A rough instrument in a rushed hand can scratch a surface. That is a failure of execution, not a description of the method. In a sound visit the instrument follows the tartar.
If you feel a new roughness on a surface that was smooth, say so before you leave. The spot can be smoothed.
Your paste at home does not replace the visit, and we do not ask you to scrub the neck hard before the appointment to "prepare" the tooth. Scrubbing exposes the root and increases the sensitivity you will feel after the tartar is gone. A soft brush is enough until we see you.
Why does sensitivity appear?
Tartar was a cover on the neck. When it is lifted, dentin or root surface meets air and cold water. A zing is common the same day or the next.
For many people it eases within days. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help if it suits your case.
If the zing becomes a throb that grows at night, or swelling on one side, that is not the usual course of a cleaning. It may be a nerve or leftover inflammation. Call and name the tooth. We do not ask you to finish a week on a painkiller without being seen.
Cold water in the first hour feels sharper than warm tea. Skip the ice if the zing is strong. That is a comfort measure.
It is not proof the tooth was weakened. The sound tooth wall was not taken away. The temporary cover, which was tartar, is what left.
A gum that was swollen may settle a little once the inflammation eases. The settling shows more of the tooth. People fear the instrument "lowered the gum." The inflammation was what had raised it.
After it calms, the level moves toward a quieter position, and some recession can remain if it was already old. The dentist can show you the difference.
If the gums had already receded
Recession means the root was showing before the visit, and tartar was filling the place and hiding it. Removing tartar does not create the recession. It reveals it.
You may feel that a tooth looks longer in the mirror. A photo from before the visit, if one exists, shows that the length was there under the layer.
The root is not enamel. It is usually darker, and more sensitive to touch and cold. Whitening does not lighten it the way it lightens the enamel crown of the tooth.
We do not promise that cleaning will match the color of the neck and the crown. If the bare neck bothers you as a shape, the talk may move to covering it or to gum care, after bleeding has settled.
A hard brush is a common reason recession continues after the visit. If you go back to a horizontal scrub, the neck increases and the zing stays, and you blame the cleaning. Switch to a soft brush and a short stroke. Floss at the edge removes what a harsh brush keeps irritating.
Do not ask for the bare neck to be drilled so it feels "as smooth as enamel." Drilling here removes tissue that does not return. Light smoothing is different from cutting the root. Ask what will happen before you agree to any cosmetic work on the neck the same day.
Bleeding during the cleaning
An inflamed gum bleeds when tartar is lifted from under its edge. Bleeding during the visit is common in that case, and it eases as the gum calms with home cleaning. It is not proof the instrument cut a tooth. It is a sign the edge was angry.
Bleeding that continues for days after the visit, or that comes with pus, or that arrives with a strong smell and a loose tooth, needs another look. The pocket may be deeper than one cleaning. Gum treatment then is a path of more than one visit, not a "tartar visit" repeated with the same force every week.
Do not stop brushing because you saw blood on the brush in the first two days. Stopping rebuilds the layer we partly removed. Brush gently at the edge.
If the blood increases instead of settling, call. A photo helps. The chair decides.
A hard rinse in the first hour does not speed healing. Rinse gently. If you were given a mouthwash, follow the sheet.
Do not buy a burning rinse from a shelf and use it stronger because the blood worried you. Extra strength irritates the tissue.
When do you come back?
There is no single interval for every mouth. Someone who builds tartar quickly, or whose gums bleed easily, may need a closer visit. Someone who keeps up with floss and builds little tartar can wait longer. The dentist sets the return at the end of the visit after seeing your mouth, not from a published calendar.
Signs you have waited too long include bleeding when you brush, odor, and a rough layer at the neck you can feel with your tongue. Do not wait for pain. Tartar does not hurt at the start. What hurts is what is underneath when it inflames, or when a separate cavity nears the nerve.
Cleaning does not prevent decay by itself. Sugar and acid between the teeth are still your job with the brush and floss. The visit removes what has hardened.
Home care slows the next hardening. The two belong together. One does not cancel the other.

WhatsApp is 055 117 0327. There is one clinic in Jeddah, Smile Makers. Say if you have had sensitivity before so we explain the zing before the instrument.
Results differ from person to person. Today's cleaning does not weaken a sound tooth. It relieves you of a layer that was hiding the neck or inflaming the gum.
If the zing stays, we see you. We do not leave you with an explanation from an article alone.
